SUMMARY:NIMA - ICRC Joint Seminar
DESCRIPTION:[wpcdt-countdown id=”55598″] \nIn an age of escalating geopolitical tensions and evolving maritime security challenges\, naval warfare faces intensified scrutiny under international law. The San Remo Manual on International Law Applicable to Armed Conflicts at Sea (1994) is a central document offering authoritative guidance on the lawful conduct of hostilities at sea. Yet\, the maritime battlespace has changed and is changing. The rise of AI\, autonomous systems\, cyber warfare\, precision weaponry\, and hybrid threats and non-state actors has reshaped the nature of naval conflict. These developments challenge the foundation of the San Remo Manual and prompt an assessment of its relevance. As naval doctrines adapt to emerging realities\, so must the legal frameworks governing Reviewing the Manual’s applicability in light of 21st-century threats is both timely and essential to ensure international maritime law remains responsive\, relevant and fit for purpose in today’s complex conflict environment.

SUMMARY:IMO’s Net-Zero Framework under MARPOL Annex VI: Pakistan’s Commitment and Way Forward
DESCRIPTION:The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has recently adopted a binding Net-Zero Regulatory Framework to align global shipping with global climate goals. Approved at MEPC 83 in April 2025\, this framework introduces two key mechanisms: a Global GHG Fuel Standard (GFS) to reduce fuel lifecycle emissions\, and a Market-Based Mechanism (MBM) that will place a carbon price on maritime emissions by 2027. These measures\, to be enforced under Annex VI of the MARPOL Convention\, will reshape global trade and shipping dynamics. \nFor Pakistan\, which has not ratified the Annex VI\, the implications are both challenging and urgent. With a lack of formal compliance architecture or integrated maritime GHG inventory\, the national fleet must transition to low-emission fuels and ports must modernize to accommodate clean fuel bunkering. Additionally\, rising carbon costs could impact the competitiveness of Pakistan’s exports unless logistics chains are decarbonized. \nIn this background\, NIMA is bringing together key stakeholders to assess institutional readiness for MARPOL Annex VI\, explore opportunities for green financing and technology transfer\, and evaluate how Pakistan can engage in the IMO’s emerging carbon markets. It will also focus on the integration of shipping emissions into national GHG inventories and future NDCs. \nPlease use the following link to join. \nHttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/86714228642\nMeeting ID: 867 1422 8642\nPasscode: 227348

SUMMARY:DEEP-SEA MINING: PROSPECTS AND THE GLOBAL CONSERVATION IMPERATIVES
DESCRIPTION:As the global population rises and the world is transiting to green energy\, acquisition of advance technologies and ever-increasing demand for rare earth metals. With land-based resources depleting\, experts suggest that seabed resources have become increasingly important as a potential reservoir to meet the increasing demand of industries. However\, deep-sea represents one of the planet’s largest and least explored ecosystems\, harboring diverse species\, unique habitats critical to ocean health and global biodiversity. This marine ecosystem is facing challenges from various maritime industrial\, trade activities and deep-sea exploration. \nGrowing body of knowledge suggests that deep-sea mining may not be financially or economically viable and what’s more\, extracting valuable minerals from the ocean floor poses significant risks including disruption of unique marine ecosystems\, irreversible environmental damage and threats to deep-sea biodiversity. As we ponder this venture\, a crucial question arises: Are deep-sea riches worth ecological ruin? With growing interest in deep-sea resource extraction\, it is essential to address the need for international collaboration to protect these ecosystems in-line with sustainability\, best practices and their ethical implications vis-à-vis economic gains. \nThis international seminar aims to provide a high-level collaborative platform to initiate a dialogue among scientists\, policymakers\, environmental advocates\, industry leaders\, and legal experts to generate discussion encompassing various opinions/ viewpoints to identify future course of action

SUMMARY:World Environment Day - 2025
DESCRIPTION:World Environment Day in 2025 will focus on ending plastic pollution . The Republic of Korea will host the global celebrations. \nFor decades\, plastic pollution has seeped into every corner of the world\, leaching into the water we drink\, into the food we eat\, and our bodies. While plastic pollution is a major concern\, it is also one of the most fixable of today’s environmental challenges\, with some obvious solutions at hand. \nWorld Environment Day joins the UNEP-led BeatPlasticPollutionthis year to mobilize communities worldwide to implement and advocate for solutions. World Environment Day will spotlight the growing scientific evidence on the impacts of plastic pollution and drive momentum to refuse\, reduce\, reuse\, recycle\, and rethink plastics use. It will also reinforce the global commitment made in 2022to end plastic pollution through a global plastic pollution treaty.

SUMMARY:World Ocean Day - 2025
DESCRIPTION:The World Maritime Day theme for 2025 “Our Ocean\, Our Obligation\, Our Opportunity” reflects the ocean’s vital role in the world economy\, with more than 80% of global trade transported by sea. The ocean is a source of jobs and food for millions of people\, a home for countless marine species\, and a regulator of the planet’s climate\, mitigating the impacts of climate change. \nAs the largest sector operating in the ocean space\, shipping has a central role to play in the protection of the marine environment and management of ocean resources. \nIMO’s long-standing commitment on this issue is evident in the robust global regulatory framework supporting cleaner\, safer seas\, and a growing portfolio of technical assistance initiatives to support ocean protection in 176 Member States. \nThe theme emphasizes the link to wider global efforts to protect the ocean including the conclusion of UN Agreement on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ Agreement)\, the negotiation of a new instrument to address plastic pollution and the third UN Ocean Conference in June 2025. \nThe theme will allow all stakeholders to showcase the deep interconnection of shipping and IMO in the ocean space\, highlighting the importance of collaboration and coordination to ensure the sustainable and safe use of ocean resources. \n\n\n\n
