To mark World Oceans Day 2024, the National Institute of Maritime Affairs (NIMA) and Bahria University Karachi jointly hosted an inclusive seminar themed “Awaken New Depths” to celebrate the importance of the ocean and to better understand how to interact with it in a sustainable manner.

Event started with the welcome speech by President NIMA Vice Admiral (Retd) Ahmed Saeed HI(M). He welcomed all guests and speakers, and highlighted the importance of sea in Karachi and said that mere statistics won’t spark the movement, we need to mobilize communities. We have to ignite a deeper connection with nature to protect Earth’s vital ecosystems to benefit human, sea and our country’s economy.

The event brought together key stakeholders including government officials, maritime community, academia, industries, students, etc. from various maritime sectors. Distinguish experts, professionals and activist from National Institute of Oceanography, United Nations FAO, Pakistan Maritime Security Agency, Marine Conservation Pakistan, etc. addressed critical challenges and pave the way for a sustainable utilization of Marine Resources. Additionally, international expert Dr. Paul Liu, Director from North Carolina State University, USA, provided valuable insights of ocean conservation and preservation challenges and opportunities. The event also included engaging activities for students. Hundreds of students participated in a “pledge wall” initiative, showcasing their commitment to ocean preservation. Additionally, an online essay competition was arranged and prize for winners were distributed during the event by the Guest of Honor Vice Chancellor Lasbela University of Agriculture, Water and Marine Sciences (LUAWMS) Professor Dr Dost Muhammad Baloch.

Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab Siddiqui graced the occasion as Chief Guest. During his closing address he emphasized on the social dimension of sea pollution i.e., the responsibility of an individual towards preservation of Mother Earth. He further elaborated that Pakistan has multilayered policies but we lack in governance & enforcement mechanisms. He assured from his department he will welcome to collaborate for any recommendation leading to eradicating pollution and conservation of ocean issues. At the end, the honorable Chief Guest distributed souvenirs to the guest speakers and the Guest of Honor. Finally, President NIMA presented souvenirs to the Chief Geust of the event Murtaza Wahab Siddiqui, the Mayor of Karachi.
