2006

Institute of Maritime Affairs (IMA)

Founded under the Prime Minister’s directives through Higher Education Commission (HEC) at Bahria University Karachi

2007

National Centre for Maritime Policy Research (NCMPR)

IMA formally started functioning as National Centre for Maritime Policy Research (NCMPR) at Bahria University Karachi with an aim to conduct maritime research and providing quality maritime education (MBA in Maritime, Postgraduate Diploma in Port Operations, various other certificate courses, etc).

2017

Maritime Policy Research (MPRC)

NCMPR continued functioning at Karachi till 2017. Thereafter, setup was expanded and Maritime Policy Research Centre (MPRC) was established at Bahria University Islamabad to assist & facilitate interaction with the Federal Government and other maritime stakeholders.

2018

Redefining of Mandate

Responsibility of formal maritime education was transferred to the newly established School of Maritime Sciences (SMS) at Bahria University, Karachi Campus, whereas, NCMPR was entrusted with maritime policy related research activities.

2019

National Institute of Maritime Affairs (NIMA)

NCMPR & MPRC were upgraded to the National Institute of Maritime Affairs with the mandate to jump start the maritime sector. The two centres were created, i.e., NIMA - Karachi & Islamabad with it’s Head Office located at Islamabad.

2023

Advisory Member - National Security Committee (NSC)

NIMA was admitted to the exclusive club of think tanks working as advisory member to NSC with a mandate to provide policy-level input to the Government of Pakistan on maritime affairs.

2024

NIMA Reorganization - Vision 2047

NIMA Board of Advisers approved Vision 2047 to enhance it’s reach to global level. It’s Vision, Mission, Objectives and Core Values were reviewed accordingly. NIMA functional hierarchy reorganized into 6 x centres, 16 x clusters and 41 x desks.

2024

Observer at Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC)

NIMA attained the observer status at IOTC.
