A two-day awareness workshop on HKC and ILO instruments applicable to the ship recycling industry

26 to 27 August 25 – A two-day awareness workshop on the Hong Kong Convention (HKC) and ILO instruments applicable to the ship recycling industry was conducted in Karachi,  The workshop, organized by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in collaboration with the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has brought together key stakeholders from the Pakistan Ship Breakers Association (PSBA), Ministry of Maritime Affairs (MOMA), IMO, ILO, National Institute of Maritime Affairs (NIMA), Balochistan Development Authority (BDA), Gadani Labour Union, and Karachi Port Trust (KPT).
As a key stakeholder in the implementation of the HKC, NIMA has been actively working towards promoting safe and environmentally sound ship recycling practices in Pakistan. In this regard, NIMA has identified significant gaps in safe practices at Gadani, particularly in relation to the HKC’s safety requirements. Commander Anees Muhammad Khan (Retd), a subject matter expert on IMO ILO HKC 2009, has attended the workshop as a representative of NIMA, contributing to the discussions on bridging these gaps and ensuring compliance with international standards as identified by NIMA in its detailed research on the subject.
