NIMA organized RTC on Weakening Rules-Based International Order Amidst Emerging Spheres of Influence
06 Feb 2026: National Institute of Maritime Affairs (NIMA) organized a roundtable conference titled “Weakening Rules-Based International Order Amidst Emerging Spheres of Influence” at NIMA, Islamabad. Ambassador Masood Khan, former President of Azad Jammu & Kashmir the Chief Guest, observed that the global order is in flux and undergoing a strategic reset, with both the United States and China exerting influence to safeguard their respective interests. Other speakers included Ambassador Masood Khalid, Mr. Syed Muhammad Ali, Dr. Zahir Kazmi, Rear Admiral Foad Amin Baig (Retd), Dr. Hassan Daud Butt, and Dr. Zia Ul Haque Shamsi.
The panel highlighted the continuing erosion of global norms related to sovereignty, territorial integrity, freedom of navigation, and peaceful dispute resolution amid intensifying great-power rivalry and weakening multilateralism. Emerging technologies—such as artificial intelligence, cyber capabilities, autonomous systems, and space-based assets are further reshaping conflict dynamics and maritime security. Participants discussed strategic choices for middle powers, geo-economic and diplomatic trends in a multipolar world, and the need for a renewed Maritime Security Paradigm to safeguard critical sea lines and national interests, drawing policy lessons for Pakistan. The event was attended by policymakers, maritime practitioners and academia.
