November 20, 2024,NIMA co-organized with The Professionals Network to hold the 14th Annual Ports & Shipping, Logistics and SCM Conference and Exhibition 2024 at Mövenpick Hotel. The theme for the event was “Capitalizing Pakistan’s Maritime Transformation”.
Cdre(R) Ovais Hyder SI(M) Director NIMA(K) introduced the Ship Building & Ship Breaking Industry, challenges and opportunities, and it’s current statistics.
High level guests were in attendance which also included the Honorary Consul General of Ethiopia Mr. Ibrahim Khalid Tawab, Mr. Mohammad Rajpar, Mr. Majeed Aziz and more. The event was graced by the presence of Ethiopian Ambassador H.E Mr. Jamal Baker Abdula, and former President KCCI Mr. Anjum Nisar.

They discussed several key areas of mutual interest, including collaborative studies on geo-strategic imperatives, opportunities for advancing aquaculture, enhancing transit trade through Pakistani ports, and fostering greater collaboration with various think tanks in Pakistan. The Ambassador assured his commitment to supporting these efforts.

Both the parties agreed to support the cause of climate change and youth capacity building through mutual cooperation and joint ventures. The MOU took place at the Pakistan Pavilion and Ms. Romina Khurshid Alam, Coordinator to PM on climate change graced the occasion as a special guest.

November 18, 2024, NIMA’s team attended the Denmark Pavilions event on “The bridge: Decarbonising the shipping industry with green fuels”.

President NIMA had a fruitful discussion with MAN Energy Solutions, Uwe Lauber about the future of green fuels in the shipping sector. It was an insightful peek into the developments happening in the world of green shipping fuels.

November 15, 2024, On November 15, 2024, Mr. Mohammed A. Rajpar, Chairman of the Pakistan Ship’s Agents Association (PSAA) & active member of BoA NIMA, met with Vice Admiral Ahmed Saeed (Retd), President NIMA.

His Excellency was presented the final copy of the research study titled “Gap Analysis Study on Safe & Environmentally Sound Ship Recycling (SENSREC) Program in Pakistan.” The President appreciated the support of Royal Norwegian Embassy and Norway’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Ambassador Ilsaas commended NIMA’s efforts and hoped to continue collaborative engagements in the future as well.

November 13, 2024, The Govt of Pak – MoMA is in the process of finalising the “PAKISTAN SHIPPING POLICY-2024.” It is aimed at revitalizing the Merchant Shipping Sector by replacing the 2001 policy with a more resilient, forward-looking, and competitive policy. In this context, a workshop to finalize the draft policy was held on Nov 13, 2024, at Islamabad, with all stakeholders. Participants included Vice Admiral Ahmed Saeed President NIMA, Senior Research Associate Cdre Raheel Masood, and Maritime Law Coordinator Sher Afzal Khan Babar, who shared valuable inputs.. President NIMA emphasized that the proposed policy must address the cardinal aspects of security & sustainability to attract investors.

November 11, 2024, Vice Admiral (Retd) Ahmed Saeed HI(M), President NIMA, welcomed Katherine Anne Stewart, Asia Pacific Regional Coordinator for Armed and Security Forces Programmes at the ICRC. This meeting highlighted the growing recognition of integrating humanitarian considerations into maritime security strategies. By fostering collaboration between maritime research institutions like NIMA and humanitarian organizations like the ICRC, both parties aim to develop more comprehensive and effective approaches to addressing complex challenges in the maritime domain.

6th November 2024, The International Conference on the Tourism Potential of Pakistan was organized by Sanober Institute in Islamabad. The event focused on the diverse tourism opportunities in Pakistan, including coastal tourism. A team of NIMA researchers headed by Vice Admiral (Retd) Ahmad Saeed HI(M), President NIMA, attended the event and shared their thoughts on the subject.

07 Nov 24, Colonel Yuri S. Kulikov, Air and Naval Attaché from the Embassy of the Russian Federation, visited the National Institute of Maritime Affairs (NIMA) and integrated with the NIMA team headed by President, Vice Admiral Ahmed Saeed HI(M).

The visiting delegate appreciated NIMA’s IMS-24 and the book on embracing Blue Economy. The discussions were centred around the geopolitical influences in the Indian Ocean region and the latest imperatives, i.e., emerging roles of BRICS, SCO, Ex Aman, etc. The potential areas of collaborative research between the two countries were also explored.

30 Oct 2024, Mr. Wajih Ur Rehman, Research Associate at National Institute of Maritime Affairs, presented Pakistan’s Ferry Safety Country Profile at the 5th ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) Workshop on Ferry Safety in Guangzhou, China.

The aim of the presentation was to provide the status of ferry operations in Pakistan, their governance structure, and the safety practices being undertaken. The Forum provided a platform to engage with regional countries to learn from their experiences in domains of maritime governance, safety of life at sea and technological best practices.

The event marked the critical importance of enhanced collaboration between MoMA and NIMA to drive Pakistan’s maritime development and unlock the potential of the country’s Blue Economy. The Minister expressed a strong desire in advancing key sectors including Aquaculture, Green Shipping, Maritime Tourism and Green Ship Recycling. In the ensuing discussions, a need was felt to develop all-inclusive National Action Plan to harness the country’s maritime resources giving due regards to sustainability. In this regard, the Minister emphasized the value of coordinated efforts among MoMA, NIMA and other maritime stakeholders. Reaffirming his commitment, the Federal Minister assured NIMA of his full support to achieve their objectives.

Minister Jam Kamal stressed the significance of developing a strong shipping industry to position Pakistan as a regional transshipment hub, optimising the strategic potential of Gwadar. He reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to fostering public-private partnerships and advancing the maritime sector.

25 Oct 2024, Ms. Sadaf, CEO of The Walnut Heights Resort and Walnut Travel Tours and Consultancy (WTTC), along with Mr. Mian Hashim Masood, Director of Operations, visited NIMA for discussions on potential areas of collaboration. The delegation received a detailed briefing on NIMA’s functions and explored possible avenues for joint efforts. Various areas of common interest came under discussion. It was agreed to develop greater cooperation for the promotion of maritime tourism & advancement of maritime interests of Pakistan.

24 Oct 2024, At the Pakistan Sustainability Summit 2024, Vice Admiral (Retd) Ahmed Saeed, President NIMA, delivered a keynote on the critical role of the ‘Sustainable Blue Economy’ in national growth, stating that marine health is essential for terrestrial life. Chief Guest Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed highlighted the need to broaden national security to include human security, focusing on population welfare for a sustainable future. Other speakers, including Geir Thomas Tonstol (ILO), Antony Kar Hung Tam (UNESCO), and Afsar Khan (KP Environment), stressed the importance of dialogue and partnerships to advance Pakistan’s Vision 2025 goals.

21 Oct 2024, National Institute of Maritime Affairs (NIMA) Islamabad in collaboration with the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI), organized 2nd seminar of the series on Blue Economy, subtitled “Challenges to Maritime Trade,” It was centered around regional connectivity initiatives including BRI, global & regional security imparities, latest technological & climate stimuluses etc.

10 Oct 2024, NIMA-K Researchers visited Karachi Port Trust (KPT) where they met with KPT Officials and were informed of the on-going work of KPT and the sustainable shipping practices being adopted by them. The visit proved highly beneficial especially for the newly joined research assistants in developing and understanding port operations.

9 Oct 2024, The National Institute of Maritime Affairs (NIMA), in collaboration with Bahria University, hosted the International Maritime Symposium 2024 (IMS 24) under the theme “Realisation of Blue Economy through the Prism of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Options for Developing Countries.” The event brought together international experts, diplomats, policymakers, and maritime professionals for discussions on sustainable practices.

2 Oct 2024, ILO country head Mr Gier Thomas gave away souvenirs to president NIMA on the occasion of call on. Matter pertaining to ILO and NIMA collaborations in the implementation of HKC at Gadani Ship Breaking yards were discussed. President NIMA recounted that it was Quaid-i-Azam M Ali Jinnah’s desire to get integrated with UN bodies like ILO. Pakistan, 3 months after its creation, applied for ILO membership on Oct 31, 1947.

30 Sep 2024, Coordinator to PM on Climate Change, Ms. Romina Khurshid Alam, was called on by President NIMA, Vice Admiral Ahmed Saeed HI(M) (Retd), along with NIMA’s team. Environment related topics came under discussion like transition to greener practices in the maritime sector, i.e., compliance to MARPOL Annex VI, GreenVoyage- 2050, CoP-29, Hong-Kong Convention etc to develop a comprehensive National Action Plan to control GHG. Ms. Romina Khurshid Alam appreciated NIMA’s role in creating awareness regarding Blue Economy and extended her support to NIMA’s endeavors.

26 Sep 2024, On the occasion of World Tourism Day, a conference on Sustainable Tourism Conference 2.1 was held at Beach Luxury Hotel. Minister for Tourism, Culture & Antiquities Mr. Zulfikar Ali Shah graced the occasion as the chief guest. President NIMA, Vice Admiral (Retd) Ahmed Saeed HI (M) honored the event as a Guest of Honor/Panelist. During his speech, he highlighted the potential of maritime tourism in Pakistan’s economy and its challenges.

26 Sep 2024, On World Maritime Day 2024, NIMA organized a seminar at Bahria University Karachi themed “Navigating the Future: Safety First.” The event highlighted maritime safety, security, and sustainability. Special messages from CNS Admiral Naveed Ashraf and IMO Secretary General Arsenio Dominguez were shared, with five expert papers presented on topics like sustainable shipping and smart port technologies. Chief Guest Dewan Rizwan Farooqui emphasized the industry’s global economic role, and NIMA showcased its research at Pakistan Maritime Museum.

24 Sep 2024, President NIMA welcomed Ms. Aneela Khan, the newly appointed Political Secretary at the Royal Norwegian Embassy. She was briefed about NIMA’s functioning, key objectives, and ongoing projects. During the discussion, the focus was on NIMA’s current and future engagements with Norway, with an aim to broaden our collaboration on the issues of promoting green practices to ensure sustainability.

17 Sep 2024, A high level delegation from Team Balochistan, led by Chairman Changgaiz Hussain Khan, visited the National Institute of Maritime Affairs (NIMA). President, Vice Admiral (Retd) Ahmed Saeed HI(M), extended warm welcome to the dignitaries. A detailed discussion followed on the promotion of maritime tourism, capacity building of coastal communities & possible potential areas of collaborations. Cdre Ovais Hyder SI(M) narrated his experiences of serving in these areas. In the end, the ‘Team Balochistan’ presented a set of traditional Balochi chadder and Dastaar to the President.

13-14 Sep 2024, On Day 2 of IMSEC, Chief Minister Sindh praised the event, and IMO SG Mr. Arsenio Dominguez lauded Pakistan’s sustainability efforts. He and Federal Minister MoMA Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh visited NIMA’s stall, showing interest in its research. Dr. John Burton discussed sustainable fishing and NIMA’s contributions. On Day 3, NIMA researchers presented on maritime trade and ship recycling, with SG IMO giving an interview to Ms. Falak Naeem.

12 Sep 2024, At IMSEC-24 in Islamabad, President NIMA, Vice Admiral Ahmed Saeed (Retd) highlighted Pakistan’s modernization of fisheries, shipbreaking, and port sectors. IMO Secretary General Arsenio Dominguez Velasco, on his first visit to Pakistan, expressed full support for boosting maritime trade and recycling while emphasizing sustainability. Minister Qaiser Sheikh reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to IMO regulations, and Deputy PM Ishaq Dar stressed climate resilience.

12 Sep 2024, During the first day of IMSEC-24, being held by Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Secretary Geneal IMO, Mr. Arsenio Dominguez joined NIMA team for lunch and had a lively introduction session with the team. It was a pleasant and unique learning experience for the researchers of NIMA to share their ideas with the SG and listen to his views on key maritime issues relavant to Pakistan
